Never say never. People get weird about spooky things, so somebody might be interested — back when I was researching the apocalypse, keeping an eye out for signs and portents and things, you would never believe the sorts of crazies who came out of the woodwork or posted online about it or claimed to collect, like, a haunted piece of toast once touched by Satan's progeny. (Or you can probably imagine, actually.)

[ As ever, Anathema has a particular skill for inserting parentheticals even when she's speaking aloud. ]

So. Who knows, some eccentric old millionaire sponsor might just crop out of the woodwork and decide that this is exactly what he needs to complete his parlour.

Adam Parrish, do not open the creepy haunted box while your witch friend is off on vacation and cannot help.

Then you open it with backup beside you, and my wards running hot, and you get glitterbombed.

Cursed glitter is one of the more innocent kind of curses we could field, I think.

Puerto Rico! My family is from there, just— not this version of it, exactly. But I'm sure enough of it should be the same and what I recognise. Good food, good beaches, a chance to relax. Kind of all I want right now.

I grew up in California — a house in Malibu — but we visited Puerto Rico pretty often. Going to see family back home, distant grandparents and aunts and uncles, and people who weren't related to us but we called them 'aunt' and 'uncle' anyway.

You're from Virginia, right?

Weird that something like that would be a discrepancy. It's not like you're from Atlantis.

What's it like in Henrietta?

Howso, if it's a small town? I'd expect that from, like, Manhattan.

[ A slightly self-conscious wince, thankfully invisible through the voice call. Anathema's so self-assured that she rarely fumbles, rarely feels that hot flash of shame — but this is one of the first times that she does. ]

Oh, wow, super congrats on getting into Harvard, though. I can't imagine that was easy, especially if you're not— advantaged like the others.

[ Not rich, moneyed, well-connected, steeped in family connections. And she considers that exact question. Everybody's pretty much equal here in this world, each of them working a dayjob and stripped of the advantages of their home universe, so she could easily just never mention it, never let it possibly affect their friendship. But. Anathema never hides from the truth, so: ]

I know the kind of boy you're talking about, though. They were all over college when I went, too, and I bet they're assholes no matter where you go.
I— never told you that I was super rich back home, right? It hadn't really come up.

Mm. Well. We did, technically, help it. Does the tech company Apple exist back in your world? My family got rich off Apple stocks thanks to Agnes' prophecies. Precognition does come a fair bit in handy sometimes.

It absolutely is. It's like pulling back the curtain and seeing how the gears all work. In our defense(?), I suppose, she just wanted to make sure we were well-provided for and well-equipped to deal with the apocalypse.

And that's good. I guess it all matters less here, too.

Is there anyone else here from your home, apart from He of Whom We Do Not Speak?

[ look she's a loyal friend okay, she's Team Adam all the way in his romantic complications ]
