〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Adam Parrish
CHARACTER AGE: 19
SERIES: The Raven Cycle
CHRONOLOGY: Post Call Down The Hawk
CLASS: Hero
HOUSING: Jeopardy 04
JOB: Assistant Manager at It's a Shoe-In Shoestore Part time mechanic, Psychic for Small Mediums at Large

BACKGROUND: I am unknowable...

PERSONALITY: Adam Parrish is a contradiction. He holds himself in higher regard to his peers and yet he longs for what they have. The ease of just being without consequence, the money, the cars—he wants it and yet he loathes others for it. His ambitions drive him forward, pushing himself far beyond his peers to escape his small town in Henrietta and subsequently his parents. His home life shaped him much more than he'd like to admit. He's cautious, introverted, and likes to watch and learn. He tends to keep his head down when it comes to his status and keep his eyes up when it comes to what he wants. Adam needs to know what everyone around him is doing, maybe thinking, to know how to react or act in any given situation.

It doesn't always work but boy does he try.

He's stubborn to a fault. His self-reliance often isolates him, has him knowing (not really knowing) that his friends won't understand the position he's in. He refuses help, viewing charity on his behalf as a debt he'll eventually need to repay and will go out of his way to avoid assistance. This becomes apparent during the court case against his father in which he does everything he can to prevent Ronan and Gansey from showing up. They show up anyway and for that he's grateful. This stubbornness doesn’t always outlast the acts his friends take on his behalf. This is apparent when it comes to Ronan’s attempt to hide his charity of covering the cost of Aglionby’s rising tuition for Adam through convoluted means. Whether he lets it go from realizing why Ronan helped him, understanding that Ronan didn’t want recognition for the act, or something else entirely is unsaid, but he doesn’t do much more than call Ronan out on the fact that he did pay for the fees.

The one aspect of Adam’s character that is not a question, that leaves no room for the contradictions of his character, is his intelligence. He works hard to maintain his grades and complete his work, pushing himself to be at the top of his classes in school to ensure his escape from Henrietta in the future. His pursuit of knowledge also often means he tries to follow logical thought—even when confronted with the fantastical and supernatural. This can, at times, make him focus more inward than needed when working with the ley lines and Cabeswater, a habit that Persephone worked to break him of in his training as a magician.

POWER:

  • Hands and Eyes: Within canon, Adam’s connection to the ley lines is a deep and pervasive one. It is directly tied to his abilities as a psychic, as a Magician, and as the waker of the lines and thusly of Cabeswater. Within the game, this connection would gravitate to the nearest source of similar energy—either as existing ley lines or the energy lines that lay between Porters (whichever is most acceptable to the mods). However, as this energy is not the same as the one Adam has come to know, it is like static—unstable and unpredictable. Through this connection, Adam would be about to use the flow of power to amplify or weaken the abilities of those close by (with a max distance of roughly 30 meters). However, to be truly effective, Adam would have to be on the line of energy itself; the further he is from it, the closer he needs to be to the person he is either amplifying or weakening. If he is too far from the line, his attempts would be nil.

It is important to note that all of this requires concentration, and with the unstable nature of this connection, Adam is likely to experience what is essentially a surge wherein the energy backfires and shorts out his own abilities and cuts off his connection to the energy pathways for roughly 24 hours (or longer if the surge is large enough).

  • Tarot Reading: Adam is able to see into the past, present and future, as life and time are not linear. Tarot reading is one of the ways he can focus the ability. He can use the cards to get a general idea of possibilities, but it is rather limited as the readings themselves are based on the cards drawn and the interpretation of those cards. Adam is mostly used to speaking in generalities and with understanding the emotions from past or future events. In the game setting, other characters would have to physically handle the cards for Adam to get a basic read from a three-card linear spread—without them touching the cards it would be conjecture and likely inaccurate. Readings will be clearer and more specific the longer he knows and the closer he is to someone. Highly specific readings would only be performed through player-player discussion, as part of a player plot, or through use of a permissions post.

  • Scrying: Adam’s preferred method of scrying is hydromancy, which requires a reflective surface made of any liquid (often in a bowl). When he is scrying, Adam goes into a trance. Within this realm, Adam stares blankly into the surface in use as he delves into the potential pathways presented to him within what is essentially a more existential and spiritual realm. He often uses light as a focusing source during these sessions.

Within the aspects of this game, it is a more spiritual trance, one that creates a more out-of-body experience that places him into a subconscious plane of existence. For this to produce any worthwhile results, Adam must be focused on searching for a specific item or person. It should be noted that it could be used to enter the subconscious of others if requested, as this is a skill he demonstrates within “Opal” and Call Down the Hawk (though that would also require the subject to be within physical reach and unconscious). The longer he is in this state, the less likely he will be able to return to his own body, resulting in death as he will stop breathing after ten minutes. A cut with a knife or sharp object can be used to bring him back before he can reach the point of death, as the pain will draw him out of a meditative state. As with tarot readings, this would be subject to a permissions post or player-to-player discussions.

〈 CHARACTER SAMPLES 〉
COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE: TEXT|
How do you deal with the knowledge you've been here before without actually remembering it? Should I be surprised or concerned? Did anyone know me before now?

I suppose I have too many questions and not enough answers. Has anyone dealt with this phenomenon? It seems surreal that, according to this device, I was here for two years before leaving and yet have no memories of this place.

LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE: TDM thread

FINAL NOTES: Adam will have Persephone's tarot deck, a dream light (described as a small sun he uses to assist his focus while scrying), and a motorcycle dreamed up without an engine but functions as one typically does (the last one, if possible).
